I think you will ultimately be much happier with it than monowall for what you describe as key criteria above, though I think it also is a touch more advanced so it might take a bit more elbow grease on your part to get it where you like it. But the best thing in my opinion, is that pfSense still seems to be a very active project.

We had reviewed one bay NAS like ZyXEL NSA-220 and two bay NAS Synology DS107+. Now it is time to review a high-end model, which is the 5 bay NAS - Synology DS508!

Synology DS508 is not targeting at personal usage but business. It has dual giga speed Etherent connections, hot-swappable HDD, and RAID 0/1/5/6 ready!

Now let's check out the box!

DS508 got a big box. From here we see that NAS today is no longer like NAS yesterday. Now we are going to get a lot of "free" functions out of the NAS!

Currently, DS508 can take up to five 1TB(1000GB) HDD. It means, if you will, you got a 5TB storage pool! And for no doubt that 5TB is just the limitaiton for today. Tomorrow you may be able to install five 1.5TG HDD and get a 7.5G storage pool in total.

Well, as a premium NAS from Synology, the spec. meets my expectation!

Yeah! the box is open!

Since the HDD on DS508 are all hot-swappable. This key is designed for security purpose. (to lock the HD inside DS508)

Well, Synology is also giving you an opportunity to have a free lesson to learn to use the Synology NAS.

2 Etherent cables and 1 power cord are included in the package of DS508.

Its almost there, coming out!

When the DS508 is finally out, I see a strange paper which treated with volatile?!

Darth Vader is standing in front of you! (No, it is DS508)

It is ver easy to unmount the HDD case.

You can get the case HDD case out very smoothly.

Just like DS408, the "Synology" mark is already printed at the side of DS508.

At the back of DS508, beside the dual giga etherent ports, we see two big system fans, usb port, eSTAT port and the "COM" port.

You may do load balancing or fail over over these two Ethernet ports.

Now, let's take a look on what's inside Synology DS508.

You will need to handle five screws before it can see what's inside!

All right, now pull up the upper case!

Oh, the mother board is located at the side of DS508.

On the other side, it is the cabin of HDDs.

The mark in red shows the location of the system memory. Now 512MB is installed. Some people questioned if they can upgrade the memory. Although no one has confirmed that you may upgrade to 2G or 1G, it is suggested that you just leave it alone. Since you are not going to get a higher throughput by installing more memory, and you are going to void the warranty if you do so.

This is the power supply of DS508. It is Active PFC design with up to 250W capability.

Here we are not going to taking apart the PCB. As you can see, all capacitors are solid. This may enhance the durability of this device.

It is hard to see the PowerPC 800Mhz CPU of this device because the heat sink is installed.

Now, let's go ahead and install the HDDs.

Its the Seagate old model HDD. (Model:7200.7) 200G. It was very expensive 4 four years ago.

Put the HDD in position.

Here are the screws that come with DS508.

You can first handle these two positions.

Finally all four screws are done!

Put back the HDD case into DS508.

Here is a Video of DS508 boot up with 1 HDD. You can check out its power consumption.

If it is your first time to boot DS508, you will need the "driver" CD which comes with the DS508. Right now there is no operation system on DS508. We need to install the HDD into DS508 (at least one) and install its operation system (or so call "Firmware") through the "driver" CD. The program that you will need to use is call "Synology Assistant". When you have done, then you may connect to the GUI of DS508 and do further configuration.

Now we are going to put one more HDD into DS508 and build a RAID 1 volume.

When the system is starting to build the RAID 1 volume. Power consumption researches 52W.

Once the RAID 1 is built, power consumption will drop down to 43W.

Let's get one more HDD into DS508.

With the installation of three HDDs, Power consumption raises to 54W.

If you put them under full loading, it may research up to 62W.

At this time we are not going to talk about the software functions of DS508 as we will introduce them in another article. If you are looking for the performance data of this DS508, here I found the testing result from the vendor, Synology. You may take it as an reference.

In this review, we will introduce two super speed boardband gateway which made by ZyXEL. They are NBG 420N(Ferrari I)及NBG 460N(Ferrari II), both of which use Atheros SoC (CPU)and the second generation of XSPAN 802.11n (wireless) technology. NBG 420N and NBG 460N have the same speed of CPU (400Mhz), RAM (32MB), Flash (4MB) and the maximum sessions of which up to 16,000. Both of them support IPSec VPN (2 Tunnels) and the second generation of MBM (Media Bandwidth Management Tech. developed by ZyXEL). The function of IPSec VPN and MBM can benefit users in setting up virtually private, confidential network, and efficient bandwidth management. The main differences between them are: first, WAN and LAN ports of 420N are only 10/100Mbps, while all WAN and LAN ports of 460N are 1000M Giga speed Ethernet. Moreover, the wireless design of 420N is 2X2 (2T2R), while 460N is 3X3(3T3R), which should give a higher throughput performance.

The package is simplified because the device belongs to the testing units.

However, what should be included are all included here!

Strangely, 420N and 460N share different power adapters. On the left you may find the power adapter for 420N, which is not used worldwide; on the right, power adapter for 460N, with global voltage range.

Let us have a look at the internal structure~ this is what we get after removing the upper case

Here is the 400Mhz CPU, Atheros� AR9130 SoC

Many modules, including the wireless module, CPU、RAM、FLASH, are covered by mental cases in NBG 460N. On one hand, we cannot see the internal parts; on the other hand, it is useful to enhance the wireless performance through decreasing interferences.

This is the largest capacitor the author ever seen. It even reaches the upper housing.

The 460N consumed 8W with all ports connected but without any traffic.

6W with all ports disconnected.

The NBG 420N consumed 5W when all ports are connected

4W without any physical connections.

Finally, before we step into the performance test section, let�s take a picture of the �Transformers� of 460N+420N. I got five legs. (Still far away from the AMD spider. Don�t blame me!)

We had a thorough introduction about the appearance and chipset of NBG-510S in the last review -- NBG-510S (Appearance). Now it is time for powering it up~ Beautiful lights, right?

Let us first check out its power assumption. When NBG-510S reaches full loading, the power assumption is around 5W

As usual, the default IP of this device is 192.168.1.1, Account for login is �admin�, password is �1234�

Asking you if you would like to configure it via Wizard or Advanced Setup

We choose �Advanced Setup� this time. The current FW version is 1.00(AMM.0), which is not a formal release (since NBG-510S is in beta phase yet). Therefore the review and data in this article is only for your reference (limited to this FW version)

First, we started the NAT performance tests. In the test, NBG-510S is with default settings. The testing tool is iperf. The results tell us that its performance is 43.9Mbps

Then we enable QoS on NBG-510S, in order to see if its performance will be affected with this function ON

We found that QoS did no affection on the performance of the device. ZyXEL really does a good job on this part

At that time, CPU utilization was not high at all, but RAM utilization was 81%

We did more pressure tests with 1000 simultaneous iperf threads. Only found that only part of connection failed

with 1000 simultaneous iperf threads running there, the performance of this device was 22.7Mbps (slowed down a lot)

Seen from the GUI statistics, CPU utilization was 99%, while RAM at 83%. At the same time, you may also discover that the status of WAN interface was always "Down" (We guess this is one of the bugs, which will be fixed in the future)

Generally speaking, the performance of NBG-510S is good

One of the most important functions of NBG-510S is SSL VPN. In GUI, it is named as "User Portal"
First, we may set a �Family Name� with a set of charactors

Define a new user account for the "User Portal" by pressing the "+" at the black arrow in below picture

You may fill out the account information here, and then click �Create� to add this account

Two main applications of SSL VPN are remote desktop connection and files sharing. We tried to set up a remote desktop connection through "Desktop Links" in the picture on the left

Key in the private IP address of the remote computer for remote connection setup. It supports both Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Protocols and VNC

Let us verify it now. On another computer, go into the login interface via Internet. Choose "I am connecting via Public computer" with the accounts you added just now, and login

Something wrong with the first login! Woo~ it turned out to be JVM-absent or JVM-outdated (Java Virtual Machine). We may download JVM by pressing "Download JVM"

We were directed to the Java Website to download the latest version of JVM

When we finished installing JVM, another login succeeded to show the loading page

In the process of Loading, the following warning will be popped up. You just need to directly click �Execute�

The RDP would appear, and it will tell you its own IP address, such as 127.0.0.3

Before the SSL VPN was set up, we have tried with 127.0.0.3 and the connection failed. With SSL VPN UP, we found it strange that 127.0.0.3 connected to itself, but not the predefined remote computer. We did more tries on both XP and Vista OS, but all with the same result. At the time of writing this review, we need more time to analyze if the problem was caused by Antivirus software installed on computers under tests or it is a bug in this FW

If you want to do file sharing, just login GUI with Admin Account, and choose �Manage Views" on the left side, then you may view different resources for different users according to predefined authority settings

Basically, there are four basic user views: "Photos"、"Videos"、"Music" and "Folders". If you need to add a new category of view, you may click "Add a Folder Category" button on the right

The Category Name is defined by you

On this page, click "+" and you will be able to assign the address of file server for the new Category

System will detect all file servers on the local network. The best way for you is to choose the target directly from the detected server list, such as "STEVEN-PC" in this case

Key in related account and password of the login to file server

Return back to the User Portal and click "Folders"

You will see the appended Category - "Test". When you go into the �Test�, you will see the files which you ever assigned. Furthermore, you may download the files directly

At last, we tried to access the device via Telnet, which directed us to a Linux interface. This means the OS is not ZyNOS. Many chances are open for DIY in the future, righrt?

Although there seems to be something wrong with its SSL VPN, the NBG-510S can only be available in market in the fourth quarter in 2008, which means there is much time for ZyXEL to solve the problems. At the same time, the performance of NBG-510S is good.

SSL VPN is rising as a secure way for data encryption. It has user-friendly interfaces for customers to configure the settings, without the need for another set of software to set VPN (what SSL VPN needs is only a WEB Browser). What is more, administrators of the SSL VPN connection can control the authority of resources. However, you may find that VPN service is not available in most of the SOHO Broadband Gateway devices, which may at most support VPN Pass-Through. VPN Pass-Through only allows VPN tunnels to be built between clients behind the device and the other party outside. You still need a VPN server in this case. Some of the Broadband Gateway devices may embed the function of VPN server and client, such as ZyXEL P334 (Introduction) or ZyXEL P335 (Introduction).
