I found one VPN router ZyXEL P334 on PCHOME, a shopping website in Taiwan. The price is around USD 30. It is really surprising to purchase an router with IPSec VPN at such a price~ ![]() ZyXEL P334 can be used for SOHO or Small Business, although the price is not high. It is not like the D-XXXX branding entry level router, which needs to be reset every other days. One of my friends happens to have one P334. According to my friend, the P334 has been running all right for at least 11 days, and there has been no sign of slowing down at all. What is more, it is often used for P2P traffic. In addition, it has many other functions. Now let us have a look at its Web GUI (multi-language supported), including English, Traditional Chinese and some other European languages, such as German and French. (ZyXEL has a large market in European as it is one of the leading network solution providers.) First of all, its PCB leaves a nice impression to users. CPU uses Infineon ADM5120P ![]() The default IP in WEB GUI (for all ZyXEL routers) is 192.168.1.1. ( By default, the DHCP Server is ON. So your PC will get an IP directly once you connect it to the router). The password for login is 1234 by default. ![]() For the first time you login, it is the English interface. If you want to change the interface into others, you may choose any other languages here. ![]() Generally speaking, if you are not familiar with router settings, wizard will guide you step by step to make simple configurations to access Internet. The Internet Access Method in P334 includes DHCP Client (Without dialing, you can surf Internet once you open your PC), PPPoE(The most frequently used way for Internet Access, dialing with the account and password that ISP provided to you), and PPTP (one type of PPPoE, but with encryption between client and server. Currently it seems UK is the only user worldwide). ![]() Of course, you may skip Wizard and go into Advanced Setup directly, where you can configure more customized settings beyond getting onto Internet. In “System”, you may change the default password 1234 to your own password, modify current time, the name of the device, and set up DNS manually... ![]() In “LAN”, you may do DHCP-related configurations, enable or disable RIP, and choose whether to use Multicast. ![]() If you are not able to access Internet at any moment, or if you want to change your settings for Internet access, this way please. ![]() Basically you do not need to configure SUA (Single User Access) or NAT unless you have local server behind the device or have more than one public WAN IP. ![]() Static Route can be configured here. ![]() The next option is “Firewall Settings”. By default, the device does not block any outgoing traffic. ![]() You may block certain services via the Firewall settings, such as to deny FTP traffic during office hours and so on. Unfortunately P2P programs like BT and eMule are not on the option list. But you may assign the exact ports which you want to block. That is great, right? ![]() Content Filter: ZyXEL P334 will automatically filter out the websites which you set with key words. At the same time, you may set filtering rules by schedule (for example, you do not block anything after office hours). ![]() Remote Management: In addition to local management via Web GUI from LAN interface, you may manage the device remotely from WAN. The remote management includes Telnet, SNMP, FTP and HTTP. ![]() IPSec VPN: It allows users to set 2 VPNs at most, connecting 2 hosts to the remote subnet, but not connecting 2 subnets together. Therefore, Site-to-Site VPN is not supported in this device. However, companies or organizations may link each other via binding 2 Servers via VPN, thereby allowing employees located separately at local and remote branch offices can share resources. ![]() UPNP: It is suggested that you use the default setting. In the past, MSN demanded UPNP. People couldn’t chat with others via video if UPNP is disabled. However, the last version of MSN has addressed this issue. Now UPNP is only used in some applications, such as P2P or NAS which is capable for video streaming. ![]() TMSS: Trend Micro Home Network Security Services. This is a product of cooperation of ZyXEL and TrendMicro. (http://tw.trendmicro.com/tw/about/new ... ticle/20070905041927.html), P334 can check if the local hosts are armed with anti-virus software or not, if the signature for the anti-virus service is updated or not. You are not allowed for Internet access if there is any security threat. But there are many limitations in it. For example, you can only use certain versions of TrendMicro’s anti-virus software, and each local host has to install an agent program and so on. Of course, you need to purchase the license from TrendMicro. ![]() Log: You may review the system logs. And you may do some customized configurations about the content and format of the logs. ![]() Maintenance: You are allowed to reset the device, do configuration backup. It is a pity that you are not able to upgrade Firmware via Web GUI. To make a successful FW upload, you need the .exe file for FW, which can be executed directly on your computer. ![]() Another advantage of P334 is that it has a Telnet Console interface. This is a DOS-like interface, with which you can execute your actions via commands. Moreover, you do not need to remember the commands at all, because ZyXEL list the commands in the form of Menu (SMT). SMT is an known tool among ZyXEL’s old customers. ![]() At last, it took me a long time to find the “System Up Time”, which shows you with the system up time since last power-on. This information can only be found from Console (SMT menu 24.1). At the time of this writing, it has been working for 11 days~ ![]()
